Foods To Help Maintain My Dynamism During Ramadan

Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection and cleansing, and is observed by fellow Muslims around the world as a month of fasting. And while it is important to keep the teachings of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. close to our hearts, mind and soul, we must be careful in ensuring that we do not neglect out bodies too!

As it is especially important that I maintain my energy level to perform my daily activities while fasting, I depend on the following types of food below to keep me going.

  • Dates
Breaking fast with dates is a common practice for Muslims as it is mentioned in the Hadith, but there are also nutritional benefits to eating dates during this fasting month!

Dates contain a high level of natural sugars that gives me an energy boost during sahur to go about with my day, and for consuming my iftar meal after fasting. What’s more, dates are also a good source of dietary fibre, antioxidants, and minerals like potassium and magnesium!

  • Milk
Milk is a great source of nutrition as it is packed with protein, calcium, B-vitamins and other bioactive nutrients that are beneficial for our health. I find milk drinks like Anlene to be suitable for my lifestyle, especially during this fasting month, as it helps keep me going with the nutrients I need to keep moving as young as I feel inside.
A simple glass of Anlene goes well with my favourite kuih when I break fast!

  • Iron-rich foods
Foods like meat, chicken, and cooked spinach are great sources of iron. Why iron, specifically? Fatigue can sometimes stem from lack of iron in our diet, so stocking up on iron-rich foods can help us feel more energised, especially when we’re fasting.

  • Fibre-rich foods
Other types of food I enjoy during puasa are the ones rich in fibre. Whole-grain, wholemeal bread, and even green vegetables like kangkung and sawi are packed with fibre.

Fibre-rich foods help me sustain my blood sugar levels throughout the day, and keep me feeling full and energised!

As spiritual as Ramadan may be, it is also important to keep ourselves healthy! I hope this list will be able to help you through your fast, and I pray that you find fulfilment during this holy month.
